What is Anaphylactic Shock? 9 Common Signs & Symptoms

Anaphylactic shock is a severe and potentially life-threatening allergic reaction. As first aid providers, understanding the signs and symptoms of anaphylaxis is crucial.

In this blog post, we’ll explore what anaphylactic shock is, its common triggers, and the key indicators to watch out for. Whether you’re a healthcare professional or an individual looking to learn more, being informed about anaphylaxis can make a significant difference in an emergency situation.

What are the common triggers for anaphylactic shock?

Anaphylactic shock is a severe allergic reaction that can occur rapidly. Here are some common triggers:

  • Insect Stings: Particularly wasp and bee stings.
  • Food Allergens: Peanuts, tree nuts, milk, seafood, and other foods.
  • Medications: Certain antibiotics (such as penicillin) and other drugs.
  • Latex: Exposure to latex products.

If you suspect anaphylaxis, seek immediate medical attention. Remember, early recognition and prompt treatment are crucial in managing this life-threatening condition.

The Natasha’s Law, implemented in October 2021, requires all pre-packaged food sold in the UK to display full ingredient lists and allergen information.

Symptoms of Anaphylactic Shock

Anaphylactic shock is a severe and potentially life-threatening allergic reaction. If it progresses to anaphylactic shock, the symptoms include:

  1. Struggling to Breathe
  2. Dizziness
  3. Confusion
  4. Sudden Feeling of Weakness
  5. Loss of Consciousness

If you or someone else experiences these symptoms, call 999 immediately and seek medical attention. An adrenaline auto-injector (such as an EpiPen) can be used if available.

Jext Auto Jets

Jext® is a single-use adrenaline auto-injector pen that delivers a premeasured dose of adrenaline for emergency anaphylaxis treatment.

Before use, the needle is safely contained within the Jext® device. After use, it is automatically covered by the black needle shield. Jext® is designed to be both simple and reliable.

At Lightning Training Solutions – we teach how to use both Jext and EpiPens.

Differentiating Between Allergic Reactions and Anaphylaxis

An allergic reaction and anaphylaxis share some similarities, but they differ significantly. Here’s how you can distinguish between the two:

  1. Allergic Reaction:
    • Skin Symptoms: Allergic reactions often involve skin symptoms, such as a rash or swelling of the face, lips, or eyes.
    • Localised Discomfort: These reactions are usually localised and may not affect multiple organ systems.
  1. Anaphylaxis:
    • Respiratory and Cardiovascular Involvement: Anaphylaxis affects the respiratory and/or cardiovascular system. Symptoms can include difficulty breathing, swelling of the tongue or throat, wheezing, coughing, abdominal pain, vomiting, and hypotension.
    • Systemic and Rapid: Anaphylaxis is systemic, rapid, and potentially life-threatening. It requires immediate medical attention.

Anaphylaxis First Aid Training Course

At Lightning Training Solutions, our Anaphylaxis Training Courses cater specifically to individuals working with either children or those prone to experiencing anaphylactic reactions.

In the UK, it’s estimated that around 1 in 50 children and 1 in 200 adults have a severe allergy, with anaphylaxis being the most severe form of allergic reaction.

As the prevalence of severe allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, continues to rise, there is a pressing need to enhance understanding and support regarding triggers such as food, latex, medications, and insect stings. By bolstering awareness and proficiency in providing life-saving interventions, we can effectively mitigate risks for those susceptible.

Designed to equip participants with essential knowledge and skills, our Anaphylaxis course enables individuals to comprehend allergic conditions and effectively manage the sudden and severe symptoms of anaphylaxis.

This is particularly vital for caregivers of children and workplace first aiders who may encounter individuals prone to anaphylaxis, empowering them to respond promptly and effectively in critical situations.

Although we deliver this as a stand-alone course it is also a standard part of all our courses.
